In the simplest of terms an appositive is something that describes a noun that is right beside it. Look at the sentence below:

Hillary Clinton, an advocate for children’s rights, has been a leading attorney for the past twenty years.

The phrase ‘an advocate for children’s rights’ is how Hilary Clinton is being described. This is an appositive

How Does it Help Me?

In writing, appositives are intelligent ways to add additional information while also increasing your word count, without seeming irrelevant. But always remember, over use will make your writing seem redundant.
